 U.S. M1851 Officer's Cloak Coat (Union)

Civil War Officers Cloak Coat, General's
U.S. Officer's Regulation Cloak Coat: was authorized for all officers by regulation. Starting in 1852, this dark blue overcoat was regulation for both Army and Marine officers (see details below) until the Army's design change in 1872. It is double breasted and made using our 20 ounce dark blue wool.

The Army version is fully lined with heavy black cotton and is edge bound with black 1/2" mohair lace. The detachable cape closes with a "loop eschelle" is also lined with black cotton. It is fully lined with heavy black cotton. Progressive rows of intricately woven sleeve braid in black silk indicate the rank of the officer. There are adjusting belts on the coat back. Coat front is kept closed by means of four "frogs". If desired, coat is available with buttons instead of frogs at a reduced price.  If the button version is ordered; there are 10 large buttons on the coat itself and 7 on the cape for the ranks of Lieutenant thru Colonel. Brigadier General's have the coat buttons placed in the 4 groups of 2 with the cape having 8 small buttons placed the same. Major General's have the large coat buttons arranged in 3 groups of 3 with the cape having 9 small buttons placed the same. There are two slash pockets just below the waistline. Progressive rows of sleeve braid are intricately woven in the Regulation pattern on the sleeve to indicate the rank of the officer. Black silk is the Regulation color for the sleeve braid. Other variations of this uniform coat are also available.

Historical Note: In 1862, the Uniform Board allowed Army officer's to wear the Enlisted sky blue Greatcoat in the field. This small change helped disguise US Officer's from Confederate Sharp Shooters.

US Marine Officer's Regulation Cloakcoat: is identical to the Army pattern except that the coat has a scarlet wool body lining in place of the black cotton lining. Per the Regulations, the Marine cape is still lined with black cotton. Marine Officer Cloak Coat only offered in the Regulation version with Scarlet wool body lining, Black Cotton Cape lining, Frog buttons and black silk braid on the sleeves.

Specify Frogs or Buttons and RANK: 2nd or 1st Lieutenant (1 row of Black Sleeve Braid), Captain (2 rows of Black Sleeve Braid), Major (3 rows of Black Sleeve Braid), Lieutenant Colonel (4 rows of Black Sleeve Braid), Colonel (5 rows of Black Sleeve Braid) or General (5 tall pattern rows of Black Sleeve Braid).
