Ladies and Girls Dresses - General Information

Our Dresses are Custom Made

All our dresses are custom made, much the same as they were in the 1800s; except you don't need to come in person, we do it long distance. We do not offer off the rack dresses, although we sometimes have prototype dresses or dresses pre-made as one of a kind (such as the "Frocks of Ages" "Imperials"). We DO NOT make a copy, or copies, of a dress that has already been made. The only except to this would be to reproduce an original period dresses. If you find a dress that we have already made and want one "just like it" we will not do this. But we will work with you to make one that you will like, but is not identical to an existing dress. That way you can never show up somewhere and have someone there in the same dress.

The dresses we offer are made from authentic patterns, period photographs and drawings or modified patterns (to make them authentic or to create a dress from a drawing or photograph). There are many more patterns for reproduction dress available than we are able to show on the web site. If you have found a pattern that you would like to have a dress made from, we can most likely use it.

To make a dress from a pattern we do not show, you need to send us the name of the pattern maker and the pattern number or send us the pattern. For dresses made from a drawing or photograph, you will need to send us the drawing/photo and as much description of the dress and time period as possible.

If you can't find a pattern, photo or drawing of exactly what you want, we will work to your specifications. Call, Write or E-Mail to discuss what you want.

Prices

Starting price is for cotton material and basic style shown, other materials, modifications, additional trim or other changes will affect the final price. We believe that our prices are very competitive for the quality and authenticity we offer.

Materials

Materials range from cotton, cotton blends, woolens, silk and others in an array of colors. Dresses can be made of a solid color, a print or combination of both in complementary or contrasting colors?

Materials will be different for a day dress, vs. riding habit vs. a formal, evening or ball / dance dress.

You can select a color and let us pick out the style of material, to fit the occasion. You might want to consider that bodice/ blouses and skirt were to look like dresses and visa versa, so matching material for both would not be unusual.

Pastel Colors: to use for dance or spring. Ranging from light yellow, pink, blue and etc.

Dark Colors: Navy, medium brown to chocolate brown, greens, blues, burgundy, wine, rust and etc. (we don't suggest navy, since it fades heavily).

Medium Colors: browns, greens, blues, rust, and etc.

Earth tones Colors:  Cream, off white, tan's, browns, rust, etc.

Trim / Decoration

Trims can be braid, lace and or piping in matching or contrasting color. The amount of trim and type of trim used will be done according to the style and use of the dress. We can also do some lace or crocheted collars, etc. If you have something special in mind for trim or decoration, check with us to see id we can do it.

Fit / Sizing / Measurements

Many of the order boxes ask for the necessary measurements required for the particular dress. Not all have been updated to ask for this information. If the sizes are not asked for on the order box, it is best to fill out the Women's Measurement Chart to obtain the best fit. UNLESS the dress is to be worn by multiple people or is for display only (such as for a museum docent or mannequin), then it can / should be ordered by a standard dress size.

Ladies Late 1820s - 1836 Lowell Mill Day /Full Crown Dress

1830's to 1840's Day Dress without Pelerine, 19th Century
Full High Crown
1830's to 1840's Day Dress without Pelerine, 19th Century
Lowell Mill

This page has two different dresses for the same time period with two options. Both are lined & bone bodices. If you notice this time period has higher up waist band, approx. 1-2" above belly button. This is the corded petticoat time period, although new starters use the 4 bone hoop, till they can afford or have the time to make the corded petticoat. (See Hoop/ corded petticoat section). This time period is approx. 125" in diameters, at the bottom of skirt. So if wish the skirt to fuller put a notation in the comment field

Full Crown dress is from 1830's up until 1836's. Which doesn't mean after 1836 this dress wasn't worn, since most women couldn't afford to throw anything away.

This dress has rectangle skirt panels and scooped bodice with dropped shoulders with gigot sleeves. The hem at ankle length. Closes in back with hook & eyes. The drawing has it with a little fuller sleeves then what it really is.

Lowell Mill dress is from the 1820's up until 1836's. This is not the same dress a "A". This dress more of a square neckline, off the shoulders, then the top of the sleeves are knife/ dart going downward to have a smoother look. Then the sleeves pucker out to a gather looking sleeve, then down to more of a tailored sleeve.

The Pelerine Caplet shown in the picture below, is like a fichu-u, or cape, a little hard to described. It can be ordered to go with either "A" or "B" as a dress up item. Can be done simply for cold weather or very decorative for evening wear and dress occasions.

Bertha, as shown in photo below (sample B) as white at top of bodice. This is like what we'd call today as a dickie. The one below is white cotton, pleated down front with stand up collar, buttons half way up the back. There is a front and back, which then ties on both sides at the waist.

Trim and Style (Use): The amount of trim varies with the intended use and social status of the owner. It can vary from no trim for a simple work/day dress to very fancy for a fancy tea or evening dress. The shopping cart offers five (5) levels for this dress: Work dress, Day Dress (simple trim), Day/Tea Dress (moderate trim), Tea dress (fancy), Evening dress (very fancy). We will add more pictures to show samples of the different levels as we can. For other variations or amounts of trim, please call or email us and talk about your needs/desires.

Optional: A Bertha or Pelerine Caplet, buttons or hook & eyes and diameters of bottom of skirt.

Lowell Mill Dress by Past Patterns. #806, 19th Century

Lowell Mill Dress
by Past Patterns. #806

According to family records, this dress was worn by Mary Gregg Butler. The original appears to have been made in the late 1820s or early 1830s when the sleeves were full. After the full sleeve fell from favor around 1836, the sleeves on the dress were banded down. The pelerine caplet is worn with the full sleeves.

The original fabric on the dress with the banded-down sleeves is a fine white cotton print with red, blue and brown flowers, leaves and vines. The fabric for the full-sleeved dress is a large poinsettia with morning trumpet flowers and large broad leaves.

This pattern is multi-sized 8 through 20. Sizes 8-14 require 7-1/4 Yds. of 45 inch wide fabric; sizes 16-20 require 7-3/4 Yds. of 45 inch wide fabric.

1830s Full High Gown
by Past Patterns. #003

The 1830's Full High Gown is copied from an original in The Hermitage Clothing Collection. The Hermitage, located in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Hermitage gown is dated to the 1830's by its rectangular skirt panels and dropped shoulders with gigot sleeves. In 1836 the gigot sleeves became unfashionable and were replaced with a sleeve that had a fullness below the elbow. Before 1836, fashion plates illustrated the hem at ankle length, but after 1836 the hem descended to the instep. The gown closes in the back with four hooks and eyes; one at the neck and three on the waistband.

Sizes 10-14 require 7 1/4 Yds. of 45 inch wide fabric; sizes 16-20 require 7 3/8 Yds. of 45 inch wide fabric.

Ladies Late 1840s thru 50s Day Dress

1830s Camp / Work Dress, 19th Century Ladies Skirts, Blouses and Dresses

This is a different dress then the other late 40s dress. This has panels/ strips of material up the center of the front of the bodice/ blouse. Straight sleeves for the time period, that have piping around the wrist with hook and eye closure. Piped around the neck. Can button or hook and eye for rest of the closure.

The skirt can be single or two tone like shown in drawing. Has 125" diameter at bottom of skirt. This can not be made wider at bottom, due to design. This is  of the corded petticoat time period. Those that are starting usually wear a 2-3 bone hoop, till they can afford to buy or have the time to make a corded petticoat. (See hoop and corded petticoat).

Want to make your own dress?
Purchase the pattern for an 1840 Fan Front Dress

Fan-Front Bodice and Flounced or Single Skirt by Past Patterns. #904, 19th Century

Fan-Front Bodice and Flounced or Single Skirt
by Past Patterns #800 & 801

This fan-front bodice and single skirt were fashionable between 1841-1847. It may also be worn as an 1850s gown because daguerreotypes abound of women wearing the fan-front bodice in the 1850s.

The illusion of a small waist is created with tucks at the shoulders which are drawn into shirring at the center front waist. The fullness at the center front waist may be fashioned into pleats.

The bodice is mounted on a form fitting lining. The lining alone may be used as a pattern for a popular variation from the fan-front. The long form fitting sleeves may be made with or without a cap. The bodice is lightly boned and closes in the back with hooks and eyes.

    This pattern is multi-sized 8 through 26 in a B, C and D cup.

Ladies 1848 into the 1850s Fan Front Dress: Evening / Wedding

1848 Day, Evening or Wedding Fan Front Dress, 19th Century Ladies

This is a custom made dress for a museum. Needs to be made of very light material, and calls for a lot of material, as you can tell. Also a dress designed not for a large woman.

The bodice/ top is very full with a gathered full curved bottom. Light lace trim around neck. There are 2 rows of satin ribbon on the edge of all the ruffles. Unseen in the picture, the dress seems to have detachable sleeves which are shown in the below pictures to take on and off when desired.

The skirt is with 4 flounces sewn over a (under) skirt under the ruffles.

This dress needs to be called on, for material availability. Could look very pretty in a Swiss miss with contrasting ribbon. Could also be made with no ribbon edge or replaced with lace edge. Also could be 3 flounces instead of four.

NOTE;  This is the corded petticoat era, although some seem to start with the 4 bone hoop, before adding the expensive of a corded petticoat. Need to decide how you want to proceed in this area.

Ladies 1848 Dress: Day or Tea

1848 Day Dress, 19th Century Ladies

This dress was a custom made for a customer last year. Straight sleeves with piping and hook and eye closure, This dress has sleeve caps as shown. Gathered in front bottom of bodice, that flare upward.  Lined and boned, with contrasting piping.

The skirt can be gathered or pleated.

Collar can be a crochet like the picture for an addition price or a straight band collar, piping or small Peter pan collar.

Do not suggest this for  large or extra large sizes, since it's pretty full in the front bodice part already.

Note; This is the corded petticoat era, although some seem to start with the 4 bone hoop, before adding the expensive of a corded petticoat. Need to decide how you want to proceed in this area. So need to know the diameter, to fit it to what you wear underneath.

Ladies 1850s-1860s Skirt and Bodice - Dress # 4400: Day

1850s Day or Evening Dress, 19th Century Ladies
This material IS NOT available

We do not recommend the front picture, since we can not date the design. The skirt and bodice in the oval picture is very correct for this time period.

The bodice/ top is with very full sleeves with no cuff. The pictures below have it as trimmed on the sleeve area, although I prefer the skirt being trim instead of sleeves. Lined and bone, with hook & eyes or buttons down front. A "V" point on the bottom of bodice. The collar is a crochet collar, yet can be with no collar or a matching or contrasting material color collar.

Skirt can be pleated or gathered, trim or untrimmed, lined or unlined and with or without dust strip.

 Ladies 1850s-1860s Never-ending Dress - # 9761: Day or Evening

1850s Day or Evening Dress. Simplicity Pattern 9761, 19th Century Ladies
This material IS NOT available

This is a 3 piece outfit, skirt and bodice /blouse, and unlike the pattern. We made modifications to correct this to fit into this time period, which include under sleeves, which has a different cut as you can tell from the pattern vs. pictures below.

The picture of the bodice/ top has caps, at the top of the sleeves for design. The sleeves were made for the use as under sleeves, like it probably was originally. The under sleeves are detachable to remove at dusk if desired or to wear during daytime activities.

The skirt is 3 flounces over a under skirt of heavy gathers and trim in solid cotton to have the design stand out. There is so much material used in the skirt, most don't need an over hoop slip. CAUTION: this dress SHOULD NOT be made from heavier drapery material, as the weight of the dress would be excessive. It can be made from the lighter drapery/home decor fabrics, although the weight may still exceed the capacity of a normal hoop and require a steel cage hoop.

Collar, can be matching or contrasting.

Suggestion; a 6 bone hoop or better.

Material cotton (print or plaid), taffeta (taffeta needs to be found first), collar (solid, or matching), color, measurements, sleeve caps or not?  Single or just two flounces instead of three.

Ladies 1850s, Civil War and 1870's Garibaldi Bodice / Blouse: Day or Evening

Ladies Day / Evening Bodice & Skirt

This bodice / blouse can be worn from pre Civil War up into the 1870's. This is more of your day style bodice/ blouse.

On this bodice / blouse, the collar/ band comes slightly up the neckline. The front overlaps where the buttons go. It has the typical drop (over shoulder) full sleeves, with cuff and buttons. And is a comfortable tuck in style, for a day and tea outfit. We like to have the option to trim as we see fit, for the best over all look. This one has two rows of trim down each side of the front, a row of trim around the collar and down the shoulder seam. Then finished off with piping around the arm holes. The buttons used are dime sized covered in contrasting color.

You can choose to have a round collar, like the Peter Pan collar style, or like the one shown. You can choose if you want piping or not and if you want covered buttons or a natural button in contrasting color or a color to match the material. The width of the cuffs can also be selected. Also this would look good with matching material, since skirts and bodice/ blouses were  to look like dresses and visa versa on dresses. And if fichu is desired, a contrast solid color or matching.

A solid color bodice/blouse can go with a variety of skirts.

Blouse: There is NO boning and lining in this version.

Bodice: This is the boned and lined version.

Trim: This bodice/blouse can be trimmed for a variety of uses. It can be left plain for use for work/camp. Simple trim can be added to make a day blouse/bodice. Or fancier trim can be added for use as a tea blouse/bodice. The photo is of a blouse with fancy trim.

Measurements for Bodice/Blouse are the bust, waist, wrist, neck, arm length and the length (neck to waist) you would like it. (Length is usually the length of today's blouses). Or even better fill out Measurement Chart.

     Materials: See general information above.

Ladies 1850s, Civil War and 1870s Hoop Skirt: Day or Evening

Ladies Day / Evening Bodice & Skirt

This skirt can be worn from pre Civil War up into the 1870's. The skirt is easy. When using a plaid it's an additional $20.00 since the panels have to be rectangle and matching. This one is pleated, going from the center front back towards the back on both sides.

Most skirts we do are gored skirts, making them gathered, which give that smaller waist look, since there is less material at the top and still gives the fullness you need at bottom for a 6 or 7 bone hoop.

Waist has a 2" waist band, though we have other widths available. If you order fish-u "A" we suggest a 1-1/2" to 2" waist band. The waist band has stiffener and is hand stitched inside, to not show any stitching and give you that smooth look. The back has a placket for closure with one or two buttons. For those that have a boyfriend or a husband, the plackets looks a lot like the men have on their dress shirts. The hem has a finish raw edge, for you to put a 1" or more hem in yourself. If you want more of a hem, just let us know.

There are so many designs to do skirts in, if you want to e-mail us or send a drawing or write a description of a design you'd like, feel free to.

For ball skirt, price runs approx. $ 200.00 and it's best to e-mail with your ideas.

Measurements for the skirt need to be the waist, and length you want it, (waist over the hip and down to the floor) and whether you wear will be wearing a 6 or 7 bone hoop. We also need your shoe heel height and your height. Or even better fill out Measurement Chart.

     Materials: See general information above.

NOTE: The Bodice and Skirt can be purchased for $ 250.00 (as shown) if both items are ordered at same time.
