This is the embroidered insignia. It is
Gold and Silver Bullion on a navy blue background. It is normally supplied loose (not attached to hat/cap),
but can be sewn on, when purchased WITH a hat or cap for an additional amount.

1861 Insignia: February 8, 1852
1862 Insignia: July 31, 1862.
1863 Insignia: May 23, 1862. Master's Mate Enlisted & Warrant
use same insignia.
1864 Insignia: January 28, 1864.
1865 Insignia: January 14, 1865. Vice Admiral is added for D. G. Farragut.
1866 Insignia: December 1, 1866.

U.S. (Union) Naval Officer's Shoulder Boards |

These are the Gold and Silver embroidered shoulder boards for the
U. S. Navy, from before the American Civil War (1852) until just after it (1866). Although the pictures of
the 1862 shoulder straps show the anchor at an angle, they also came parallel to the side of the
shoulder strap, like the 1864 ones. The eagles on the shoulder straps also varied, based on the maker, etc. Our eagles and
anchors may vary somewhat from the pictures below.
