US Officer's Kepis are made of dark blue wool with black
braid. Braid by Rank is: 2nd Lieutenant - none, 1st Lieutenant - 1 row,
Captain - 2 rows, Major - 3 rows, Lt. Colonel - 4 rows, Colonel - 5 rows.
By U.S. Regulation, Generals wore the Chapeau hat for dress occasions. No
braided caps are listed for Generals in the regulations, however, a few
Generals did devise their own and had them made by hatters. Corresponding rows of braid can be added horizontally
at the top of the band (add $5.00 per row). Also, a leather binding can be
added to the edge of the brim (add $5.00). US caps have a leather brim,
sweatband and adjustable chin strap with brass slide.
Gold Bullion embroidered insignia,
if purchased, is normally supplied loose but can be sewn on for an additional charge.

U.S. (Union) Officer's Kepi (QM-0831/QM-0832/QM-0833/QM-0834/QM-0835/QM-0836)
US Marine Officer Kepi: The basic
cap (far left) comes without the embroidered badge. Cap on right shows the
badge sewn on. All Marine Officer ranks (except Commandant) wore the same
cap. Three rows of black silk braid in the “clover” pattern, and on the
front, sides and back with a single row encircling the clover design. The
band has black ribbed trim as called for in the Marine Regulations. Lining
of the cap is black and the leather brim is standard with the deluxe edge
binding. Small Marine buttons attach the adjustable chin strap. Made in the
USA!

The US M1861 forage cap features the round sloping
(crescent shaped) leather brim, made popular by General McDowell. Often called
the "bummer's cap", because so many of William Sherman's men wore them.
Same high quality materials as the Kepi. The officer's forage cap has a leather
binding on the edge of the brim (not shown). This cap was used by both Union and
Confederate officers and enlisted.
Cavalry Insignia is shown but not included. Hat comes UNTRIMMED.
Branch Insignia, Regimental Number and Company Letter can be added to purchase.

The U.S. Officer's Slouch Hat was authorized for all officers
by regulation. This same hat was used by Confederate officers in both Black and Grey. This hat is
made of good quality Wool Felt. Officers slouch has ribbon hat band and a ribbon binding sewn
around the brim edge.
Fully Trimmed hat comes with Officers Embroidered Gold Bullion Branch
Insignia and Black & Gold Officer's Hat Cord (as shown at
top) for BOTH U.S. and C.S. (Confederate) officers. The only hat
insignia that is different for Confederate is the Staff emblem, all others
are the same for both U.S. and C.S.. Trim is supplied loose (not
attached).

This is the Officer's Hat cord
for the Hardee hat and Slouch Hats. Regulations call for a Gold and Black
hat cord for all officer's except Generals who wear all gold, with the gold
being gold bullion. It was used for both the Civil War & Indian Wars. There is also a Non-Regulation Hat Cord of Gold Bullion and Branch Colors
available for Officer's of the Artillery, Cavalry and Infantry.
Staff and Field Officers, Regulation: Black Silk and Gold Bullion
hat cord. On some of these the acorn is reversed with a gold bullion tip and
black netting. This hat cord is available either in machine braided or hand
twisted. The hand twisted is thicker cording.
General Officers, Regulation: Gold Bullion hat cord for all
Generals.
Artillery, NON-Regulation: Red Silk and Gold Bullion hat
cord.
Cavalry, NON-Regulation: Yellow Silk and Gold Bullion hat
cord. This one looks very much like the Generals and you have to look close
to see that there is yellow silk and it is not all gold bullion.
