M1847 Grimsley Saddles
Mexican War Dragoons & Civil War Officers |
|
 |
 |
This is the Mexican War enlisted man's saddle. It was the regulation saddle
from 1847 until it was replaced with the M1859 McClellan in 1859. The M1847 Grimsley is double skirted, has a
hair padding seat, correct polished brass stirrups and brass over the cantle and pommel. The tree is a rawhide
covered wooden tree with quarter horse bars. The stirrup hangers, staples and iron rings are all hand forged.
The tree is a true 14" size, as per originals. The M1847 Grimsley saddle comes complete with wool girth,
coat straps, valise straps and period reproduction brass beveled-edge horseshoe buckles.
This saddle was still in use during the Civil War by officers on both sides.
We HIGHLY recommend the use of a surcingle with this saddle. It is actually part of
the saddles design, not an extra item. The surcingle for this saddle is made of 3 1/2" wool webbing with
brass horseshoe buckles and a 1 1/4" billet.
This item normally Drop Ships from the manufacturer, with a delivery time
of delivery time is 4 to 8 weeks.

Ranger Cavalry Saddle (California Saddle)
|
|
|
The Ranger Saddle, also called the California Saddle, was produced early in the war
and was used by numerous Union units when McClellan saddles were difficult to obtain. It was requested by
the 2nd Kansas Cavalry (US). The one we offer is styled from a picture of an 8th Tennessee (US) cavalry
saddle. There is also a picture of a Federal cavalryman in Echos of Glory, Arms and Equipment of the Union
(p. 69), riding what appears to be a ranger saddle. This saddle is similar to descriptions of a Confederate
saddle that was produced by the Atlanta Arsenal. Our saddle is built on a new tree and has short harness
leather skirts with steel rings, staples and footman loops. All you need is the girth and surcingle, which
are added by default by the shopping cart, and this saddle is ready to ride. NOTE: the surcingle is

Military Style Hope Cavalry Saddle
|
|

Joseph E. Johnston Style |

Edward L. Gallatin Style |
Joseph E. Johnston Style Hope Saddle
This Hope Saddle on the left is similar to the one that Confederate General
Joseph E. Johnston was riding at Seven Pines. Hope saddles were popular from the 1850s through the 1890s
and recommended for use in the Confederacy during the last half of the War. Many Southerners rode to battle
on Hope saddles that they brought from home. These saddles were also popular in the North - Union General
Hugh Kilpatrick used one.
On this saddle we have used heavy harness leather throughout, from the half seat
to the full underskirts, fenders, and hooded stirrups. It also has border stamping, brass ringing dees, and
decorative rigging. Brass tacks are used to secure the seat.
This saddle is available in black or russet leather.
Edward L. Gallatin Style Hope Saddle
This elegant Hope Saddle on the right is inspired by the Edward L. Gallatin saddles. Gallatin
studied under Thornton Grimsley in St. Louis, Missouri. He was producing saddles in Denver, Colorado during
the early 1860's. Union General Hugh Kilpatrick is reported to have ridden a Hope saddle that had many
similarities to this design.
This Hope has a full seat with jockeys, full underskirts, fenders and hooded
stirrups. It has a wide front rigging and a decorative cap. A beautiful border stamping graces the heavy US
harness leather that is used throughout. There are heavy steel rigging rings, and brass footman stands /
loops and breast collar rings.
This Hope is not only beautiful, but it is extremely comfortable to ride. It
is available in black or russet leather. The girth and surcingle are added by default
by the shopping cart, so these saddles are ready to ride. (Also available without the girth and surcingle.)
NOTE: the surcingle is part of the engineering design of this saddle, although not absolutely
necessary for use, it is a safety item and we DO HIGHLY recommend its use.
Normal delivery time is 6 to 8 weeks.

Military Style Spanish Saddle
|
|
|
This style of 'Spanish' Saddle was made from the mid 1840s through
the 1860s. In the Victorian era, often any saddle with a horn was referred to as a Spanish or Mexican saddle.
Our saddle is patterned after many originals and styled after one that is in the General Sweeney Museum near
Republic, Missouri. It is made of heavy harness leather and features a tooled half seat, fenders, and skirts.
It has a decorative pommel guard, hooded stirrups, and a high pommel and horn.
These saddles were very common and were produced from Florida to Missouri and to California.
Before the War in the 1850s, Thornton Grimsley was making the Spanish Saddle in St. Louis, Missouri.
The girth and surcingle are added by default by the shopping cart, so these saddles are
ready to ride. (Also available without the girth and surcingle.) NOTE: the surcingle is part of the
engineering design of this saddle, although not absolutely necessary for use, it is a safety item and we DO
HIGHLY recommend its use.
Normal delivery time is 6 to 8 weeks. Rush order / From Stock at additional fee, CHECK FOR
