AzRAHist's reenactors cover every aspect of 19th Century (1800s) living history, both military or civilian. Our civilian and military reenactors can come completely equipped with Period Uniform or Clothing, Accoutrements, Weapons, Personal and Camp equipment, Horse and Tack (for mounted images: Cowboys, Cavalry, Dragoons, Outlaws, Vaqueros and everyone else who rode a horse during the 19th Century) or with whatever portion of the image is required. This includes:
Advisors: Our Reenactor Advisors can be either on-camera or off-camera personnel, or both. In most cases, the Reenactor Advisors are NOT additional personnel, but is an additional duty given to the Reenactor Coordinators and Senior Reenactor Staff. It is the duty of the reenactor advisors to answer questions regarding military drill, military protocol, clothing, uniforms, equipment and any other historical information requested.
The Lead Reenactor Advisor interfaces with all the departments that need his services, this usually includes Wardrobe, Props, Weapons Master and sometimes the Set Dressing department. The Lead Reenactor Advisor is the person responsible for answering any questions that the different departments may have, both in pre-production and during the shoot. This can involve questions such as what reenactors are, what uniforms and equipment they will bring, do they come with facial hair, etc.
Artillery: Our re-enactor artillery is experienced in both horse and mounted artillery. Because of our experience, our gun crews have been selected to be featured as foreground gun crews and also for scenes that required a high level of skill and training. We were the Number 1 gun crew on the CSS Virginia (formerly the USS Merrimac) and the USS Cumberland for the movie Ironclads (TNT) and our artillery advisor was the gunner for a rapid fire sequence filmed during North and South, Book II.
For horse drawn artillery, we have professional horsemen experienced as both wheel horse and lead horse drivers. To me there is nothing more exciting than an artillery piece pulled behind 6 horses.
Buffalo Soldiers: Our re-enactor Buffalo Soldiers represent the American soldiers of African descent that were involved in the United States Army, both Cavalry and Infantry. They were organized in 1867 and participated in the Indian Wars, Spanish American War and in World War One. Although they were not called Buffalo Soldiers prior to 1867, Americans of African Descent participated in the military prior to these periods. Our Buffalo Soldiers can also be used for these earlier portrayals. Some of them also do civilian images.
For more information about our Buffalo Soldiers, see Cavalry and Infantry.
Camps: Our re-enactor camps can be set up as military or civilian. The civilian camps can be mining camps, settler camps or most any other 19th Century (1800s) type of tent camp. These camps can be fully equipped with tables, chairs, boxes, crates, bedding, picket lines, campfire and cooking equipment, lamps and lanterns, and everything else needed to make them look like a fully functional camp. Our tents include wall tents, tent flys, A frame tents and dog tents. We have access to marquee tents, tepees, lean-tos and other styles of tents.
Cavalry: Our re-enactor cavalrymen are expert military history horsemen for use as Civil War Union (U.S.) or Confederate Cavalry (C.S.), Mexican War Dragoons, Indian Wars Cavalry and Buffalo Soldiers, Span-Am War or U.S. World War I Cavalry or Buffalo Soldiers (W.W.I). As we consider safety to be a primary concern, our mounted cavalrymen's riding and horsemanship skills are evaluated before they are allowed to participate in any mounted projects.
The United States Cavalry is the most seen military branch in films, whether they are about the Mexican War, American Civil War, Indian Wars or Spanish-American War. It is no surprise, as they are the most impressive branch of the 1800's military. With man and horse acting as a single entity, the Cavalry makes for an awe inspiring scene.
Civilians: Our re-enactor civilians do a variety of images. These include: Cowboys, Outlaws, Towns People (Ladies, Gentlemen and Others), Hunters / Trappers, Miners, Vaqueros and more. They can be Mounted or Dismounted, Upscale or Down and Dirty. For example, we they have been:
Dragoons: Our re-enactor dragoons are composed of expert military history horsemen for use as Mexican War Dragoons. The two Regiments of United States Dragoons were converted to Cavalry at the beginning of the American Civil War. As we consider safety to be a primary concern our riders are evaluated on their riding and horsemanship skills, before they are allowed to participate in any mounted projects.
Coordinators and Staff: Our Reenactor Coordinators are off-camera personnel. The number of Reenactor Coordinators required and the number of pre-production days depends on the size of the project and how many reenactors are to be used. On most projects they perform the duties of Extras Casting Assistants & Assistant Directors and interface with the members of those departments. They also often function as the (off-camera) Senior Reenactor Advisors.
It is their duty to recruit the necessary reenactors for the shoot. During the shooting schedule they interface with the Assistant Director and notify the reenactors as to what shoot days each reenactor works, the start time for each day of shooting and what uniforms and equipment are needed. They help the production crew interface with the reenactors during the days of the shoot.
The Lead Reenactor Coordinator can work with the Director or Assistant Director during pre-production to help determine how many reenactors are required to make each scene work.
Infantry: Our Infantry is exclusively made up of experienced Infantry Re-Enactors. They are drilled in the Manual of Arms from the appropriate time period. Because of the inherently dangerous nature of re-enacting battles, safety is strictly enforced by our re-enactor officers. They are experts in every aspect of the Infantry Soldier of the 1800's. Many of them have participated in more battles than the soldiers that they have chosen to portray. Their longevity is, of course, helped by the fact that when the battles is over, the dead can get up to fight again.
Just as the original Senior Infantry Officers were mounted, our re-enactor Senior Infantry Officers can also come mounted. As with all the other mounted impressions, mounted officers have their riding and horsemanship skills evaluated, before they are allowed to participate (on horseback) in any mounted projects.
Navy: Our Naval re-enactors include Civil War Officers and Enlisted Seamen, for both Union and Confederate. Though not often seen in movies, the Navy played an important part during the American Civil War, especially in river service on ironclads and other ships. The Navy was also involved in our War with Mexican and participated in various invasions of that country, during that time.
Naval images are not just limited to ships, Navy officers
and seamen were seen on land also. For example, during the Civil War, Naval Gun Crews
were used as Artillery Gun Crews during many battles (this is especially true for the
Confederacy.) For those land battles that they participated in, they can make for a
different look when one is appropriately placed into the scene.
Our 19th Century (1800s) military and civilian reenactors have been seen as both US and CS in historical films, such as: Glory (cavalry, infantry, navy), TNT's Geronimo (cavalry), Ironclads (navy, civilians & infantry), Far and Away (civilians), Back to the Future III (cavalry), Wild Wild West (cavalry, infantry and civilian), Blind Justice (cavalry and outlaws) and Los Locos (cavalry), as well as on the television series Young Riders, commercials (cavalry and civilians) and an interactive CD (civilians).
