    This is the embroidered rank insignia normally worn on the Fatigue Coat (Frock Coat). It is similar to the American Civil War shoulder boards.

    M1839 Dragoon "Shoulder Boards": are not like the shoulder boards of the other branches. They are similar to the enlisted shoulder scales, except with black wool on the body with the brass crescent and gold bullion edge. They were used from 1839 until 1851.

    The Artillery and Dragoon Officer's Epaulettes are of Gold Bullion with Brass Crescent and Gold Bullion rank insignia for 1st Lieutenant, Captain, Lt. Colonel and Colonel. 2nd Lieutenant and Major have no insignia.
