M1885 Enlisted Foot Dress Frock Coat

   In 1885, new Chevrons for the Dress Coats were adopted by the Army uniform board. They were 1/2" gold lace on a branch of service wool backer, as seen in the photo at the left. Patterned from original specifications.

   Heavy Artillery - Red Trim.
   Hospital Steward - Emerald Green Trim with white piping.
   Infantry - White Trim (changed from sky blue on July 4th 1885).
   Ordnance - Crimson (Dark Wine) Trim with white piping.

    Chevrons are not included, but are available for an additional charge. 5 year Service Stripes, if ordered, are ordered from latest service to oldest service. If only one service stripe is ordered then it will be just above the cuff trim. If more than one is ordered they will start just above the cuff trim with the oldest service and be placed one above the other to the latest service. ONLY the 5th and/or 6th service stripes can have "Service In War", because the only War Service would be the American Civil War Service (1860-1865). Different branch color can be selected for each service stripe, for those soldiers that served in different branches at different times.

    Proper trousers for these Dress Coats are the M1885 Medium Blue wool Trousers.

    Proper head gear is the M1881 Dress Helmet for Foot.

    Proper belt is the M1874 Standing Loop Belt.

   The M1884 Gold Bouillon dress coat chevrons are the same pattern as the M1872 chevrons, except they are made with Gold Bouillon.

    In 1898 the Army authorized cotton chevrons to be used on the khaki uniform. This was so that the coat and chevrons would shrink at the same rate. These cotton chevrons are ONLY for use on the khaki coats.
