General Information
    These waist length jackets were worn by many Civil War Union Cavalry and Artillery units throughout the war and by Dragoon and Mounted Rifle units early in the American Civil War. Several Infantry units and some state militia wore untrimmed versions of this uniform jacket, commonly called a Roundabout. The infantry version was created in the field by cutting the skirt off the US Infantry frockcoat in warmer weather to make a shorter jacket. Although not regulation, this was considerably more comfortable to wear during the summer months. Our shell jackets and roundabouts are made from a good grade of dark blue wool and the standard lining for enlisted men is natural muslin. Optional chest padding and special lining materials are available at extra cost.

    Shell Jacket, M1858: Standard braid on the M1858 Regulation Trimmed SHELLJACKET is cotton twill. Worsted wool braid is available at extra cost. The M1858 jacket has two bolsters in back to support the waist belt. The jacket front has 12 small US Eagle buttons supplied. Collar has the double side buttons. Branch trim on M1858 shell jackets: Artillery - Red, Cavalry - Yellow or Mounted Rifles - Green.

    Shell Jacket, M1864 Veterans Reserve Corps: Early in the War, the Government realized it had a sizeable amount of men that because of wounds or other infirmities were unfit for combat service. Initially called the Invalid Corps, many men who had recovered from their wounds served out their enlistments doing less strenuous work for the Army in the Veteran's Reserve Corps. In many cases, this would be guarding prisoners, clerical duties, etc. Jackets in Sky Blue wool with dark blue lace were issued to enlisted men. Our jacket is natural cotton lined and includes the buttons, but not sewn on. Order the standard sky blue Trousers with appropriate rank trim if needed. When re-assigned to the VRC, a soldier would keep the same rank he had when serving with his combat arms unit.

   Our US NCO Chevrons (rank stripes) are made loose and may be ordered by themselves. The backing is of the same wool as our uniforms are made from, so there is no noticeable color difference. They are available in two price levels for Artillery, Cavalry, Engineers and Infantry branches: cotton twill tape and worsted wool braid.

    Chevrons are also available for Sky Blue Greatcoats and Veterans Reserve Corps Jackets. Reverse colors are used on Infantry Greatcoats and Veterans Reserve Coats - Dark Blue stripes are placed on a Sky Blue wool background.

   These are the brass shoulder scales used on some early war Union Army uniforms. They were worn by units such as the Iron Brigade and others.

    The Enlisted and NCO shoulder scales are the same except for the size. The NCO Staff shoulder scales adds the brass rivets. The attachment set IS NOT included for the Enlisted, NCO and NCO Staff shoulder scales, but is available separately.

    The USMC (Marine Corps) shoulder scales are the same as the Enlisted and NCO except that the are the largest and have fringe plates to hold the fringe. The attachment set IS included with the USMC shoulder scales, but the fringe IS NOT included. The fringe is available separately.

    NOTE: Except for the USMC shoulder scales, the ATTACHMENT SET is NOT INCLUDED with the shoulder scales and is sold separately.
